MedPal AI (MPAL)  has welcomed the UK approval of the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist for weight loss and weight management, describing the development as a potentially significant catalyst for its recently launched New Health private weight management clinic.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has granted marketing authorisation to Novo Nordisk's oral semaglutide tablet for adults who are obese or overweight. The treatment is available on a prescription-only basis and is not currently available through the National Health Service (NHS), leaving private providers as the primary route of access while evaluation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) continues.

The company believes the approval has arrived earlier than many market participants expected and could accelerate demand for private weight management services. Meanwhile, MedPal points to the US launch of oral semaglutide as a strong indicator of potential uptake in the UK market.

According to Novo Nordisk, more than three million prescriptions were issued in the United States within just over five months of launch. In addition, over 80% of prescriptions were written for patients who had not previously used a GLP-1 therapy, suggesting the oral format is attracting new users rather than simply replacing injectable treatments.

MedPal believes the introduction of a tablet-based option could significantly expand the addressable market by appealing to patients who are unwilling or unable to self-administer injections. Furthermore, the company said its vertically integrated model, combining AI-supported patient triage, clinician-led prescribing and robotic dispensing, positions New Health to respond to increased demand.

The timing is particularly relevant as New Health has recently launched its national marketing campaign and seeks to establish itself within the growing private weight management market.

MedPal AI's Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jason Drummond said: "This approval has arrived faster than the market expected, and the timing for New Health could hardly be better. The US data is striking - three million prescriptions in five months, with the overwhelming majority going to people who had never used a GLP-1 before. That tells us the oral format is unlocking an entirely new patient population, not simply switching existing ones. New Health was built for exactly this moment: clinician-led, technology-enabled, and ready to make this treatment available safely and at scale as we take our national campaign live."

The approval of oral semaglutide could mark an important development for the weight management market, particularly if it attracts patients who have previously avoided injectable therapies. For MedPal, the launch comes at an opportune moment as New Health begins its national rollout, potentially providing access to a broader pool of patients seeking private treatment options.
